Bhap was founded by a brahma family in 1200 AD after they left the state of Jaisalmer because the Maharawal ( The King ) was forced to relinquish their daughter to marry him. The lake at Bhap was named after the head of the Brahman family,Magraj who built the lake in 1515 but died before completion. His first wife was so devastated by his death she sacrificed herself at his cremation so the second wife completed the job of building the beautiful and picturesque lake of Bhap which has the wonderful architecture of three cenotaphs built in honour of the the love shared between these three people. The lake today is surrounded by nature and wildlife including peacock, migratory birds, kurga, bullock, camel, kingfisher and the wonderful colourful life of the village people. During the era of British rule Bhap was found to have very salty underground water and was therefore the beginning of salt manufacturing for the local area. Today it is one of the most lucrative businesses in the area and supplies many states in India and exported all over the world.
